SMU’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion works with people across the University to develop, coordinate, and advance the organizational vision and strategy to fulfill the University’s core values of excellence, integrity, intellectual freedom, open dialogue, diversity and inclusion. They are currently seeking a Program and Communications Coordinator.

About the Position: 

This role is an on-campus, in-person position. 

This role will serve as the primary external communication and programming coordinator for the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The person in this role will work to coordinate and produce ODI’s cultural intelligence programming, including the Bridgebuilder’s Luncheon and Heritage series and co-sponsor of various campus programs. This this role will oversee the publication and management of ODI’s website, monthly campus newsletter, and social media.  

Essential Functions: 

  • Program and Event Coordination- Oversees major programming initiatives of the office including oversight of the Bridge Builder’s Luncheon and key Heritage months. Works directly with diversity officers, booking agents, facilities, marketing and external affairs to ensure success of programming. Also works with other student and employee affinity groups, and marketing/community affairs.  
  • Communication Coordination: Develops and manages key communication vehicles for the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Has oversight of strategy and implementation of department website and social media content; newsletter, and program promotion with campus stakeholders. Works with University marketing and external affairs for message alignment.  
  • Training and Recruitment support: Communicates and promotes training events and opportunities for campus. Also oversees and coordinates faculty recruitment ad process in key locations for greater reach.  
  • Quarterly Meeting Coordination: Coordination of the logistics and preparations for quarterly meetings between University President (other Senior Leaders) and key constituents including but not limited to the Black Unity Forum, APASA, and other Employee Affinity Groups.

Education and Experience: 

A Bachelor’s degree is required. Preferably in field of study in public relations, journalism, communication and management.  

A minimum of two (2) years of experience in communication, journalism, public relations or similar industry is required.  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

Candidate must possess experience in web design and creating marketing/campaigns for large medium to large size events. Candidate must also demonstrate ability to work with individuals of various backgrounds including senior leadership executive assistants, student and faculty leaders. Candidate with proficiency with Canva (or other graphic design software), Microsoft 365, and experience with HootSuite is highly desired. Social media knowledge in Twitter and Instagram is preferred.  

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.  

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.
