The Division of Corporate Communication and Public Affairs (CCPA) at SMU has two renowned study abroad opportunities in London, and both are led by CCPA faculty. Both programs are described in detail below.
You may apply to either of these Study Abroad programs on the SMU Study Abroad website.
SMU-in-London: Communication
This 5-week, 6-hour credit program led by CCPA Chair Dr. Sandra Duhé has earned a reputation as a favorite experience among students.
Available to pre-majors, CCPA majors, and non-majors alike, SMU-in-London: Communication provides a rigorous course of study by professors who are experts in their fields. London’s many attractions, historical sites, and cultural venues are central to each course, providing students the opportunity to experience this dynamic city and surrounding areas as a resident. Students live and learn at Regent’s University in the heart of the city.
Group trips include Scotland and Cambridge, with an optional student weekend tour of the Scottish countryside. The program also includes two free travel weekends for students to visit the UK and Ireland and/or Europe. Classes are held Monday – Thursday mornings, leaving participants plenty of time to study, explore, and enjoy an extended stay abroad.
Go to the Study Abroad website, complete an Advising Profile, and get started on your application ASAP. Students who apply by December 15 are eligible for scholarships, so don’t delay! Program admission is done on a rolling basis, so the sooner you apply, the better.
Courses:
Students enroll in two courses, which typically include CCPA, ADV, and/or JOUR offerings. Program details and an early December recruiting event are announced on the CCPA blog each year.
Program Dates: Late May through Early July

SMU-in-London: Internship
The internship program, led by Dr. Owen Lynch, offers junior and senior students of CCPA and other majors the opportunity to work abroad in their field. Students complete a 6-week internship that greatly enhances their resume by building professional skills, gaining a global corporate perspective, and forging future connections as they work in London. Students receive six-course credits: 3 hours from Dr. Lynch’s rigorous Globalization, Economics, and Communication course and 3 hours from the internship.
All internship students will participate in an internship orientation to prepare them for their interviews and discuss the cultural differences of working in the United Kingdom. The program is a long-time student favorite for those eager to showcase international work experience to future employers.
Examples of London Communication Internships are:
- Sister Public Relations (fashion and retail PR)
- Raindance TV (independent film advertisement and PR)
- Diplomat Magazine (foreign affairs magazine)
- Tulchan Communications (Financial PR)
- Blow Records (independent label, music publisher, and club promoter)
- The Commonwealth Lawyer Association (international law and human rights organization)
Students live in provided housing with amenities to support their work and studies.
Students interested in Dr. Lynch’s London Internship Program should apply early through SMU Study Abroad and email him at olynch@smu.edu with any questions.
