Spring break is the perfect time for SMU students to take a break from studying in Fondren Library, soak up some sun, and make unforgettable memories with friends. Whether you’re looking for beaches, nightlife, adventure, or a cultural escape, there’s a destination for everyone. We asked around and found out where most students would go over the break!
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico 🌴

Many SMU students flock to Cabo for an upscale beach getaway. It’s known for stunning resorts, poolside parties, and nightlife at spots like El Squid Roe and Mango Deck. Plus, direct flights from Dallas make it an easy choice. The most popular restaurants include Bagatelle Los Cabos, which is known for its lively and energetic atmosphere. Dancing on tables is part of the experience. The restaurant blends fine dining with a party vibe, featuring DJ music, bottle parades, and an upscale yet fun environment where guests are encouraged to dance—sometimes even on tables. Iif you want a high-energy dining experience with a French Mediterranean touch, this is the place! Other popular spots include Me Cabo, Taboo, and the Waldorf Astoria.
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic 🏝
Many senior students like to go to Punta Cana and stay at the “Teeth of the Dog” Golf Course in Casa de Campo Resort & Villas. There are several golf courses, horseback riding, restaurants, nightlife, multiple beaches, etc. It is common for groups in sororities and fraternities to rent out large villas. Similar to Cabo, the days are filled with boat rides, and the nights are filled with fun group dinners. The most popular clubs in Punta Cana include Coco Bongo, a mix of clubs and Cirque du Soleil-style performances with live music and acrobats, and Imagine Nightclub, a club inside a real cave with different music rooms.
Miami, Florida ☀️

South Beach is a go-to for SMU students looking for high-energy beach parties, luxury hotels, and some of the best clubs in the country. Expect pool parties, yacht rentals, and late nights at LIV (Fontainebleau). Other popular clubs include E11EVEN, a 24/7 nightclub with live performances and a mix of club and entertainment vibes, and Club Space, an after-hours club where people party until sunrise. There are many popular DJs that have residences in Miami, so they frequent these downtown clubs. I recommend trying Cuban food in Little Havana, stopping at the food trucks, or grabbing brunch at hotspots like Miami Slice or The Social Club.
Europe (Barcelona, Ibiza, Amsterdam) 🎉

Some students opt for a more cultural spring break, heading to Europe for sightseeing, shopping, and exploring iconic cities. Especially popular for juniors and seniors who have friends studying abroad and want to visit them for longer than a weekend. In Barcelona, it is popular to go bar hopping along Las Ramblas. Or go to beach clubs like Opium, and do late-night dancing at Razzmatazz. In Ibiza, clubs like Amnesia, Pacha, and Ushuaïa throw massive parties with great house music and have stunning beaches. While in Amsterdam, The Leidseplein Pub Crawl is a classic student favorite with free shots and bar entry. Lastly, I recommend checking out the Anne Frank House—a must-visit for history lovers (book tickets in advance!).
Aspen, Colorado ❄️

For those who prefer the mountains over the beach, Aspen is a top pick. Skiing, après-ski parties, and cozy cabins make it a fun yet sophisticated spring break destination. I recommend checking out Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro, the most legendary après spot, with champagne spraying and insane mountaintop parties. Aspen is home to four world-class ski resorts, all included in the same lift pass: Ajax, Snowmass, Aspen Highlands, and Buttermilk. Lift tickets are expensive—buy in advance or look for student discounts.
And, Back Home! 🏠

After the first half of spring break, many students like to split their time in half by going back home to visit their families. Most people don’t come back to Dallas after the first few days to spend time in their homes/dorms but rather take that opportunity to visit family and friends or even to take a break in the middle of the semester. College is stressful; sometimes, returning home is just what students need to recharge after long nights of studying.
