Journaling
By: Yasmine Boueri
As we begin to settle into the new semester, it’s only natural to feel the urge to set goals, prioritize what is important, and collect our thoughts. We perhaps think about the highs, the lows, and everything in between. For college students, especially, taking time to acknowledge both our successes and our areas for growth is essential. Life moves so quickly that we really often forget to pause and truly look back. One of the most effective and meaningful ways to do so is through the art of journaling.
What’s the benefit of Journaling?
Journaling creates an intentional time for any kind of reflection that will serve you at a given time. The point of this action is not to necessarily write down your deepest thoughts in a poetic way, but to simply write anything you feel, no matter how significant. This can force us to slow down and process our thoughts, emotions, and experiences in a way that we miss in daily life. One of the best things about journaling is that it genuinely forces us to admit to ourselves how we actually feel about everything happening or that has happened in our lives (I mean, why would anyone sugar-coat the truth in a notebook only they can read?). In my experience, journaling has become an effective way to recount how I feel about my relationships, aspirations, and even the world around me. In doing so, journaling can become an act of self-care; an opportunity for showing honesty, patience, and compassion toward ourselves (some good ole fashioned TLC!).
Beyond reflection, journaling can also promote personal growth. When we revisit our entries, we begin to notice patterns in our behaviors, mindsets, and actions. Here’s the thing, as humans, we are always evolving. Many times, people will notice that they don’t have the same beliefs about certain things that they once did, or that a goal that someone may have seemed impossible can easily be achievable. Journaling helps us to see our growth and learn the areas in which we can change. It’s kind of a funny thing, journaling, because there are issues that feel so out of reach when it is just left in your head, but when you force yourself to write it on paper and take it out of your brain, everything becomes clearer. It transforms reflection into action.
How to journal in the digital age?

The great thing about the digitalized age we live in is that journaling can be extremely accessible. You no longer need a notebook and a pen to jot down some thoughts. With Apple’s iMac, you can use apps that come with the device, such as the Notes App or Apple Journal. You can also download external apps like Notion, Rosebud, or Day One. The options are endless! There are a plethora of ways to find what works for you and journal.
Overall thoughts on Journaling:
In a busy environment like college, journaling serves as a tool to keep us afloat. It’s a reminder to check in with ourselves, respect what we are going through, and make sense of our journey. If you’re looking for a new hobby or self-care tool to try, consider this your sign to take up journaling.
