Things to Do in Dallas When You Need a Break

When your computer screen blurs and your eyes plead for relief, it’s time for a well-deserved break. Whether it’s relaxation, inspiration, or simply a change of scenery you seek, here are six rejuvenating activities to enjoy in Dallas when you need to escape the monotony of work.

Stroll Around Williams Park

Take a stroll around Williams Park. Nestled in the heart of University Park, this neighborhood gem is small but stunning. It’s especially pleasant on a warm day. Grab a cold drink at the nearby Snider Plaza, then enjoy a walk around the charming homes. Relax on one of the many benches nestled in the shade of the trees, watch the ducks glide by on the lake, and soak up the sunshine. And if you’re chasing some endorphins, try stopping by the pickleball courts for a quick game with the locals and get a burst of energy.

Enjoy the View at White Rock Lake

White Rock Lake is a staple outdoor sanctuary for Dallasites. Roughly three miles from the SMU campus, White Rock Lake is a picturesque setting for a jog, bike ride, picnic, or even just a stroll. And if you’re a coffee enthusiast, make sure to stop by the popular White Rock Coffee. Known for its signature brews and pastries, White Rock Coffee is one of the best spots in Dallas for a quick bite or cup of joe. And if you are lucky, you’ll likely catch the local Girl Scouts selling a variety of their famous cookies right outside.

Catch a Flick at The Angelika at Mockingbird Station

The Angelika in Mockingbird Station is a favorite spot for avid movie lovers in the area. Popular for their screenings of arthouse and indie movies. The Angelika promises a great movie-going experience at affordable prices and with fewer crowds than larger theaters. It’s a great place to grab a friend, enjoy some concessions, and immerse yourself in the wonderful world of cinema. Across the street from Southern Methodist University, they offer student discounts with a valid student ID and $5 tickets for matinee movies every Tuesday. Also, they feature classic movies on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m.

Shop at Dallas Farmers Market

What began in 1941 as a horse-and-wagon wholesale business, Dallas Farmers Market has now grown into an expansive home for fresh produce, free-range meats, artisan baked goods, and handmade crafts. While their indoor shops are open seven days a week, the outdoor farmers market area booms on Saturdays and Sundays. It aims to highlight local vendors and support local agriculture by offering farm-fresh goods sourced within a 400-mile radius of Dallas. It’s an excellent destination for families, friends, and even furry companions. The market also boasts several stands that sell specialty dog treats and food.

Explore Bishop Arts

The streets of Dallas’s Bishop Arts District are lined with independent bookshops, quaint restaurants, and small shops selling an eclectic range of local handmade goods. It’s a great place to stroll without an agenda. Start at the corner of West Ninth Street and North Bishop Avenue, then continue down Bishop to explore its unique businesses. You’re sure to discover some one-of-a-kind treasures. The Salty Donut offers specialty sweet treats. Oasis Plant Shop is a quaint greenhouse brimming with local plants and flowers. Lockhart Smokehouse is an authentic Texas smokehouse renowned for its incredible barbecue.

Laugh at Dallas Comedy Club

When you’re looking for a laugh but don’t want to stare at a screen, try Dallas Comedy Club. The club in Deep Ellum offers improv and sketch comedy shows five nights weekly. It welcomes patrons 18+ until 10 p.m. and 21+ after 10 p.m. It showcases talented comedians, providing a chance to unwind and enjoy laughter with friends or family. Just be sure not to park in front of Terry Black’s; they will tow!
