Dallas has a rhythm that never truly slows down, and nowhere is that more apparent than around SMU’s campus. With enduring local favorites that have been part of student life for decades and new spots that seem to emerge each semester, the area strikes a perfect balance between the familiar and what’s new. Whether you’re in the mood for a walk, food, or art and culture, there’s plenty to explore around campus. As a result, the area feels both lively and welcoming.

The Trail That Keeps Dallas Moving

Something is grounding about starting your day or ending your evening on the Katy Trail. One of Dallas’s most well-known and beloved spots. This 3.5-mile paved trail follows the route of the old Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. The trail runs from north of downtown, through Uptown and Turtle Creek, then continues toward SMU and Highland Park. This connects the Knox Street and Mockingbird Station areas. Along the way, coffee shops and restaurants line the path, making it easy to pair a workout with a latte.

A Peaceful Escape Close to Home

Meanwhile, just a short drive from campus, the Dallas Arboretum offers 66 acres of peaceful gardens. Overlooking White Rock Lake, the Arboretum shows off vibrant seasonal displays throughout the year. Tulips cover the grounds in the spring, while pumpkin villages appear in the fall, making it a year-round favorite. Whether you’re looking for a quiet place or a scenic spot to explore with friends, it has something for everyone.

The Classics of Snider Plaza

Bubba's Cooks Country location at Snider Plaza

Back near campus, Dallas is a food lover’s dream, and Snider Plaza remains a classic. Where old meets new in the most local way. Longtime favorites like Kuby’s Sausage House & European Market, Bubba’s Cooks Country, and Burger House give the area its familiar charm. Kuby’s is a German restaurant with a European market serving bratwurst and schnitzel since 1961. Bubba’s opened in 1981 in a converted gas station. It built its reputation on its crispy fried chicken and classic Southern comfort food. No mention of Snider Plaza would be complete without Burger House. This 1951 favorite burger joint has been flipping some of Dallas’s most popular burgers and their signature seasoned fries under walls filled with SMU memorabilia.
