Job Description

The Public Relations Specialist, under general supervision, performs media relations activities, including but not limited to research, writing, and disseminating communications that increase the awareness and visibility of Prairie View A&M University.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides public relations and ongoing support to assigned academic and programmatic areas campus-wide, including but not limited to messaging, media outreach, and social media.
  • Mines stories on an ongoing basis, leveraging profiles, events, and angles to support broader university messages. Works with team members or vendors to develop photography, video, and infographics to accompany stories as appropriate.
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with key national, regional, local, and trade news media. Executes all aspects of media relations, including story development, media targeting, pitching, media monitoring, and relationship management.
  • Successfully manages relationships with assigned schools and colleges to optimize collaboration opportunities. Mines beats for stories, profiles, events, and angles to support broader university messages. Inform beats of PR procedures and best practices to encourage communications consistency campus-wide.
  • Drafts, edits and disseminates communications materials such as press releases, op-eds, blogs, feature stories, media advisories, scripts, calendar listings, public service announcements, newsletters, e-newsletters, web site content, university podcast, and other promotional materials as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field.
  • Three years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Knowledge of media and public relations.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, marketing, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be proficient in AP Style Guide.
  • Strong writing and editing skills; must be proficient in many writing styles, including promotional writing.
  • Must have an understanding of 24-hour news cycle and media markets.
  • Competency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, web-based content management systems, Adobe CS Suite.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and set priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to meet deadlines consistently, particularly those requiring very quick turnaround.
  • Ability to think critically and analytically; Adaptable; ability to work independently and across teams.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills are required, with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple initiatives.
